What is e-commerce ?.

•      B2C commerce

What is e-business?

•      Running all the functions of a business using internet (purchase, marketing&sales, backoffice etc.)
•      B2B commerce

Your business needs a website-  4 good reasons:

1. Global marketplace.

It allows your business to open up new avenues to customers in the world's largest marketplace, while at the same time permitting you to be more targeted in your approach.

2. Improve your relationship-building with Customers.

Your customers will love being the centre of attention. Serve them when they want to be served - 24 hours a day, seven days a week and during holiday periods. Ensure that they are presented with the most up-to-date information about your products and services. Exploit the interactivity of the web to permit your customers to show you what their needs are.

3. Enhance your message and attract interest

The web is a highly sophisticated means of communication. You can deliver dynamic and appealing presentations that will capture the attention of prospective customers. Add colour, movement, sound and video to cast a compelling marketing message that goes way beyond what can be achieved with traditional media.

4. Advertising your business on the internet allows you to reach a huge audience

At a per capita cost that is a fraction of what you would pay for a glossy brochure, magazine, newspaper or phone book advertisement or a TV or radio spot. The speed and convenience of Internet communications can translate to cost savings in many business situations. A business website can also significantly reduce long distance telephone and fax charges to and from your customers and business partners.

Some Web terms

Domain - Domain Name

The unique name that identifies an Internet site. Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots. The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general.

Eg: www.btreeinfotech.com

mail (Electronic Mail) --
Messages, usually text, sent from one person to another via computer. E-mail can also be sent automatically to a large number of addresses via a Mailing List.

hit

“hit" means a single request from a web browser for a single item from a web server; thus in order for a web browser to display a page that contains 3 graphics, 4 "hits" would occur at the server: 1 for the HTML page, and one for each of the 3 graphics. "hits" are often used as a very rough measure of load on a server, e.g. "Our server has been getting 300,000 hits per month.

Home Page
The main web page for a business, organisation, person, or simply the main page out of a collection of web pages.

html
(HyperText Markup Language) -- The coding language used to create Hypertext documents for use on the World Wide Web. HTML files are meant to be viewed using a World Wide Web browser program, such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer.

ISP

(Internet Service Provider) -- An institution that provides access to the Internet in some form.

Java

is a programming language that is specifically designed for writing programs that can be safely downloaded to your computer through the Internet. Using small Java programs (called Applets ), Web pages can include functions such as animations, calculators, and other fancy tricks.

MODEM

(MOdulator, DEModulator) -- A device that you connect to your computer and to a phone line, that allows the computer to talk to other computers through the phone system. Required for dial up internet connection.

Security

Security Certificate. A chunk of information (often stored as a text file) that is used by the SSL protocol to establish a secure connection. Security Certificates contain information about who it belongs to, who it was issued by, a unique serial number or other unique identification, valid dates, and an encrypted "fingerprint" that can be used to verify the contents of the certificate. In order for an SSL connection to be created both sides must have a valid Security Certificate.

SSL

(Secure Sockets Layer) -- A protocol designed to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet. SSL is used mostly in communications between web browsers and web servers. URL's that begin with "https" indicate that an SSL connection will be used. SSL provides 3 important things: Privacy, Authentication, and Message Integrity.

Server

A computer, or a software package, that provides a specific kind of service to client software running on other computers. The term can refer to a particular piece of software, such as a WWW server, or to the machine on which the software is running, e.g.Our mail server is down today, that's why e-mail isn't getting out.

WWW

(World Wide Web) -- the interconnected network of hypertext servers (HTTP servers) which are the servers that allow text, graphics, sound files, etc. to be mixed together.

e-commerce issues

1. Picking an E-Commerce Provider.

It is probably the first and most important step you take to insure that you will have the service that you want at the level you are expecting. Because this is such a significant process, it is important that you know the difference between an Internet Service Provider and a Commerce Service Provider.

Internet Service Provider (ISP).

ISP's are usually the first place that companies turn to for information and even e-commerce service. It is possible that your current ISP has an e-commerce solution for you; however, because most ISP's have such a broad range of products that they offer, they may not be able to give you the most advanced e-commerce service available.

Commerce Service Provider (CSP).

A CSP is a company that does not support any kind of dial-up or basic web hosting. All a CSP does is support and deploy e-commerce solutions for clients. A good CSP will purchase connectivity service from an ISP and they will be self-contained from there. As in all specialty areas, you will find a wide variety of companies and a wide level of service options. BTREE INFOTECH IS A CSP.

Credit Card Issues

Credit card acceptance for many companies is a normal way to do business. On the web, there are some new complexities that need to be understood and managed when one decides to accept them through this median. Most normal merchant accounts will not allow real time authentication nor will they allow complete processing without some manual step.

Many of the companies that offer these services on the web charge a lot more in their per-transaction charges than a merchant would pay in their normal stores to take a card. In many cases there is a couple of extra hands involved with the transaction which can raise the credit card fee.

Security Issues.

Security is another big question about shopping on the web. Overall, information travelling over the web is extremely safe if it goes through a secure site. All ransactions should use a SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) process.

No one but the person who actually enters the number will ever see the credit card data that goes through our site. This is now safer than handing your card to someone at a retail store. This aspect of security on the Internet is not widely understood by the general user; however, when it does become common knowledge, it is possible that Internet transactions will be preferred over calling an operator on the phone.

Opening a web based e-commerce store

It is much like opening a new branch to the existing store. Even though the startup costs are much less, you still need to make some investments if you want your e-store to succeed. Although you may not have to worry about leasing, fixtures and stationary, you still need to think about other issues.

How much will your web site cost to build and maintain? How will you market your web site so the whole world will come to your site? In addition, how you will handle incoming business and inquiries that may arise from the e-store's presence? These are just a few of the issues may arise.

If you're thinking about starting an e-store, here are some of the steps that you may want to take in order to deal with the issues discussed earlier.

    Step 1: Pick Your Provider.

Your first step must be to secure your location on the Internet. You do that by picking your E-commerce provider. BTREE INFOTECH IS AN E-COMMERCE PROVIDER.

Step 2: The Design of Your Store.

•      Design your product catalogs

•      Look and feel of the store.

    Step 3: Connectivity.

(To manage your store and process orders)

•      Dial-up connection (slow)

•      D S L (fast)

•      Cable service (fast)

  Step 4: Monitoring Your Competitors.

Find out everything you can about how your competitors run their e-store.

•      Do they have an easy order process?

•      How do they display their products?

•      Do they have easy navigation?

•      How much are they selling their products for?

•      Do they offer a wide or narrow product selection?

Questions like these will help you to better decide how you want your store to run.

Step 5: Begin Your Marketing Plan.

•      Who is going to be responsible for running the store. Place one person dedicated to web marketing and making your web division grow.

•      As much as everyone would like to believe, you cannot just build it and they will come. The success of your web site depends on how well you market it. Your marketing mix may not just rely on web-oriented methods.

Investing in an e-Store.

 The Evolution of the e-Store.

•      A high quality e-store was so costly in the beginning that it wasn't a feasible option for most companies.
•      As the Internet has matured and the commercial applications have become more refined, the cost of using a more user-friendly environment has come down
•      A professional commerce store in 1995 costs Rs.100 lakhs.
•      Today, the cost of the hardware and software is about Rs. 10 lakhs for a medium size  setup, plus a couple of programmers to deploy and maintain the site.
•      But if you plan to place your site on a commerce service providers server, then you can start with as little as Rs. 25,000.

Budgeting for your e-Store.

Development/ Design Fees.

The Development/Design fees cover the development of the look and feel of the site. It is very important that your site be functional as well as eye pleasing. We suggest that you be prepared for to Rs.5,000 to Rs. 25,000 for the development of basic e-store.

Monthly fees.

Rs.1,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month. This price covers the hosting and maintenance of your e-store.

Credit card Processing.

•      Each credit card company charges a fee for processing.
•      Eg: 3% plus a Rs.15 per transaction fee for Internet-type transactions.
•      Every business has different needs as far as Credit Card Processing.

Internet Marketing

You have built it and they will come…. it does not really work like that. The competition on the web is as strong as any other you can imagine. The big thing you need to do once you have your e-store up and ready to go is to promote it.

•      If you already have a marketing firm, we suggest you talk with them about strategy. BTREE INFOTECH PROVIDES complete Internet Marketing Services.

Ad Banners

Placing an ad banner on other web sites can be a great way to create a presence on the web. Ad  banners on popular search engines such as Yahoo, Excite and others beginning as low as Rs. 2,000 per month for 8000 + exposures. This is a very inexpensive way to get your name in front of thousands of people.

Email Lists.

Promotional messages sent by email can be a very effective means of advertising your e-store. Especially when the messages you send are directly targeted to readers who are interested in the types of products that you sell.

The Search Engine Myth…

The popular belief about search engines is that as soon as you register your site with one, thousands of people will automatically be drawn to your site. This is not always the case. The success of your registration depends mostly on how many other people are listed under the same keyword or category. BTREE INFOTECH PROVIDES a 'surehit' 300+ search engine submission service.

Classified Advertising.

The media companies as well as many others that are looking at using classifieds as an effective way to bring many customers back to their site on a regular basis.

•            very broad buy-sell-trade sites
•            specialized ones that focus on one category,  like personnel.
